ESM Held New Postgraduate Academic Norm and Morality Report Conference

“If postgraduates cannot focus on one thing to the end, they may end up with failure in their lifetime. This ‘one thing’ is “academic morality and norm.” On September 12th, in Classroom 80307, Secretary Zhang Ting of Evergrande School of Management, taught the first class for 62 new postgraduates of 2018 session in Management School on the theme “Set up Academic Notion, Promote Research Innovation”.

Centering on “Academic Norms and Morality”, Secretary Zhang Ting taught the new postgraduates in three aspects, respectively ten bad behaviors and damages, ten academic norms and standards that postgraduates should abide by and ten science research spirits and qualities. Zhang Ting cited Gong Ke’s words, pointing out that academic morality as “ethics” of academic researches, including pursuit of authenticity and practicality, innovation, responsibilities, collaboration and cooperation. The fundamental was “authenticity” and “responsibilities”, which were the “core” of academic ethics. Later, Zhang Ting listed 10 bad academic behaviors with such examples as “Hanxin Faking Event” and “Huang Yuxi’s Faking Data” to tell students severe damages of bad academic behaviors. Subsequently, Zhang Ting educated students to abide by 10 academic norms during postgraduate learning period, including literature investigation, theme selection and data collection to correctly guide their academic behaviors. Then, he elevated academic behaviors to morality, clarified the orientation for new postgraduates based on 10 research spirits and qualities, and educated that students should keep WUST’s quality in mind finally: perseverant, courageous, practical, devoted and consistent in actions and words. This was the first class for new postgraduates.

After the conference, new postgraduates successively said that it was of great significance. They not only got to know the responsibilities of performing academic researches, but also would be alert in later learning. They expressed that they would keep Zhang Ting’s word “Be practical in teaching and learning” in subsequent studies and researches in mind and put it in practices.
